SAN DOMENICO'S ECO-LITERACY PROGRAM
SAN ANSELMO, CA

In this month, when we celebrate "earth awareness," we congratulate San Domenico school in San Anselmo, CA for their very successful Eco-Literacy program. The content of the program teaches students about natural systems and our connection to them from a social, spiritual, cultural and health perspective.

Canon Lawyer Sharon Holland, IHM to Speak at DASS Annual Meeting, October 15-16, 2012

The DASS Executive Board met at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse in Columbus, OH on March 12, 2012. Sister Sharon Holland IHM, prominent Canon Lawyer, spoke to the Board members about the present realities and future possibilities for Catholic independent schools.

Sister Sharon addressed several issues of major concern:

the present ecclesial and civil status of our schools;
the critical relationship of the sponsored schools with their founding congregation;
canonical and civil options for the future; and
the importance of formational/educational programs for local boards, leadership, and lay personnel in all our schools.

DASS school representatives gathered for the 2011 Annual In-Service and Meeting at Our Lady of the Elms Schools in Akron, OH on October 18^th and 19^th. This year's in-service provided DASS members the opportunity to visit Crown Point Ecology Center in Bath, OH.

Reminders:

People who are attending the Annual meeting/In-service, October 18th and 19th, 2011 in Akron, Ohio will receive confirmation from Lisa Massello (Principal of Our Lady of the Elms' Schools) regarding airport pickups.

For the In-Service day on October 18th, people staying at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn hotel will be picked up at 8:30 a.m. in front of the hotel or Motherhouse.

Please remember to dress comfortably for our visit to the Crown Point Ecology Center.

"If we can find ways of sharing our faith that touch the imagination, which excite the mind and the heart, then the young will be drawn to us...We need to share some sense of the adventure of faith." ("Preaching to the Young," Timothy Radcliffe,OP)
At the end of March, campus ministers and theology chairs from our Midwest Dominican high schools gathered at Queen of Peace High School in Burbank, IL for a day of sharing around the theme of "The role of the Campus Minister in a Catholic Dominican High School." Sandra Iwanski, nationally known author and presenter, who has served for many years as Campus Minister at Rosary High School in Aurora, IL asked: What is the one thing you bring to ministry in a Catholic Dominican school? Who you are will determine the lens through which you approach your position as campus minister... Your personal spirituality is critical to what you are about.
In preparation for this gathering, participants were asked to reflect on the rewards and challenges of serving as a campus minister in a high school setting.

We make it clear that Christ the King High School is a Catholic, Jesuit school, and that we're not going to back down from that.For us to water down our Jesuit identity because most of our kids aren't Catholic would be a huge mistake on our part." We make sure that our students and our families are aware that we come from this great 450 year-old tradition of Jesuit education and that we teach students what it is to be Catholic, to be women and men for others, what it means to find God in all things, to seek excellence, and to reflect on how to grow and improve." ("The Jesuit Partners," Fall, 2008)
I would hope that the sentiment reflected in this response would also be ours as Dominican educators.
